Genius for Retail has three levels of organisation above the item: category, subcategory and group. Getting this right at install is what makes the till usable and the reporting meaningful.
Where
Merchant Portal, Items in the left navigation menu, then Item Library.
What you can do
- Add a category, subcategory or group.
- Edit an existing one.
- Move one under a different parent.
- Delete one.
Design guidance
- Build categories around how the shop actually sells, not how the supplier ships. Staff should find an item in one tap from the top level.
- Keep the top level short. A long category list is slower than a search.
- Use subcategories for depth, not for storage. If a subcategory holds two items, it is probably not worth the tap.
- Match category structure to how the owner wants sales reported, because that is what the reports will roll up.
Before you delete
Deleting a category affects everything under it. Move the items out first, then delete the empty container.
