Take a credit card payment in Genius for Retail

Card payments are taken through the Genius reader, with the customer facing display prompting the guest.

Start the payment

On an existing ticket, tap Tender, then Credit Card > Add Payment. The CFD prompts the customer to insert, tap or swipe.

CFD card prompt

Contactless

The customer taps their card on the reader. If the read fails, the reader prompts them to try again by tapping, inserting or swiping.

EMV

The customer inserts their chip card. If the chip cannot be read, the reader asks them to reinsert. After three failed attempts it prompts for a swipe instead.

Swipe

Swipe is for cards without chip or contactless, or after the other methods have failed.

Manual entry

  1. In the Add Payment window, choose Manual Entry from the Payment Mode list.
  2. The reader prompts the customer to hand the card to the cashier.
  3. Enter the card details and tap Submit. The POS validates the number as you type and tells you if it is invalid.
Manual entry payment mode

Use manual entry last, not first. It carries a higher rate and higher fraud risk than a read card.

The Address field

Optional. If you use it, enter the street address only, for example 123 Main St. Do not enter city or state. The value feeds Address Verification Service, which is the fraud check. A malformed address makes AVS worse, not better.

Signature

With signature capture enabled, the CFD prompts the customer to sign after a successful payment.
