Menu board terms and how content flows

Genius menu boards use a handful of building blocks. Once you know these, everything else in the Genius Portal makes sense. All of these live in the Genius Portal under the 4-dot menu > Digital Menu Board.

The building blocks

TermWhat it means
Display schemaThe physical setup of your screens: how many displays, and whether each one is landscape or portrait. Example: three landscape screens over the counter.
Content designOne screen of content: images, video, text and live prices placed on a canvas.
DaypartA slice of the business day, such as Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner.
ScheduleWhich daypart starts at what time on each day of the week.
Content layoutA display schema with a content design assigned to every screen for every daypart. This is what gets sent to a store.
DeploymentSending a content layout to one or more sites, now or at a set date and time.
TakeoverContent that temporarily plays over your menu, on a timer or when an order starts, is paid or is cancelled. Great for promotions.
Share codeA five-digit code that links a TV to a site. It is valid for 24 hours and can be refreshed any time.
Display sleepTimes the screens turn themselves off, usually 15 minutes after close until 15 minutes before open.
Business attributesSite-level settings, such as whether a store offers a gluten-free menu, that can switch content on or off.
Product pricing componentA price on a design that is linked to a menu item, so it updates from Genius instead of being typed in.

How content gets to the screen

  1. Create the dayparts and a schedule for when they start.
  2. Build a content design for each screen.
  3. Combine them into a content layout, choosing a design per screen per daypart.
  4. Deploy the layout to your sites.
  5. Each TV, linked with a share code, downloads its screen and switches content as each daypart begins.
Watch it instead: the Genius menu board video tutorials walk through each of these in two to five minutes apiece.
